Artist Statement
I paint imaginary creatures and their habitats using water-based media on paper. I use spontaneous methods and chance techniques that allow creatures and landscapes to reveal themselves.
Beginning without predetermined goals, I play with materials to tell stories I didn't know I'd tell. This improvisational process allows forms to coalesce into expressive shapes: a mark becomes a creature, while a wash of colors brings forth an atmospheric new terrain. This approach gives rise to stories that respond to visual ideas, yielding both narratives and pure abstractions.
One recent project, Wish You Were Here, explores the formation of the earth through the eyes of imaginary onlookers—curious, innocent, intelligent beings, perhaps only half-formed themselves—as they witness a world materializing around them. A second project, When the Moons Came to Visit, tells a whimsical story through sequential watercolor panels.
Overlaps between painting and music are naturally abundant, and a typical day finds me alternating between the music and art studios. Fundamental elements of painting, such as line, composition, color, and tone, have their analogs in music. Subconsciously, the mix and flow between these aspects of music and art has a deep influence on my painting—and my playing.
